Why choosing the cheaper option may turn out to be more expensive

by Meieli Sawyer

We are all working on a budget. And the budget always gets lower whilst the demands increase. This is why most of us are inclined to look for more cost efficient options, that seem to make you earn money simply by not spending them. The thing is that you should think about this type of options in the light of their effect on the long term.

Let’s take, as an example, the creation of a brand logo. You can always look for a professional to do that, an experienced logo designer pro with previous works that you can analyse throughly. This is the moment when you remind yourself the Marketing department is working on emergency resources only, surviving with barters and other friendly agreements. And you think about that guy in Sales who seems to know his way around Photoshop. Genius, you ask him to think about it, no pressure, he is honoured and comes up with a few proposals, out of which some are decent, some suck and 2 or 3 can be winners, having the features of a unique logo design. After a little brainstorming within the team, you choose one and announce it officialy. After a while, you want to make some t-shirts for a contest and are offered with high prices, because the logo you have has a gradient. You are then informed it is impossible to put it on mugs and other materials or, if you wish for those in particular, you are obliged to accept a simpler version of the logo, slightly resembling it.

Let’s think about the professional approach. Someone who’s done this a thousand times will begin by interviewing you about your business, so that he can complete a sort of a brief, with all relevant information. He will ask about the history of the brand, the competition, the plans you have, about your audience, and about communication strategies and values. All these are essential for their work, as the logo is connected and impacted by them. After a certain amount of time, they will deliver some proposals you will have the chance to understand the idea of and think about for a while. If you don’t like any, you can just say it straight, nobody is going to take it personally, they will just begin somewhere new, as they will know by then your likes and dislikes. Feedback, in this case, is crucial. It and only it will guide you until the Holy Graal will be set in front of your eyes, a logo like no other, perfect for any use, original and eye-catching.

Comparing these 2 situations, the money spent on the latter seem well spent, isn’t it? It doesn’t matter if you are a modern minimalist business or a huge company, you all deserve to be represented according to the highest standards.
